English Translation

Hello everyone! Have you ever been to karaoke? Karaoke in Japan is something really special. Today, we're talking all about Japanese karaoke. This podcast is JLPT N5 level. We use N5 grammar and vocabulary throughout. Karaoke is incredibly popular in Japan.

People go with friends, family, and coworkers. It's really common to go after work. But it's not just a work thing. High schoolers, university students -- everyone goes! I go to karaoke a lot myself! It's genuinely so much fun. But Japanese karaoke is a little different from what you might expect. It's different from karaoke in other countries.

How is it different, exactly? That's exactly what we're going to talk about! Let's learn together! First -- the thing that surprises people most. Japanese karaoke is NOT a big stage in front of everyone. You get a private room! You sing in your own room.

Inside the room, there's a microphone, a TV, and a sofa. The rooms are small. But they're just right! You can sing with just your friends. No embarrassment here -- because it's a private room. The rooms are clean and cosy.

There are popular Japanese songs and English songs. Japanese songs might feel tricky at first. But hey -- it's great practice! You can practise Japanese while having fun. Now, let's talk about food and drinks. At Japanese karaoke, you can order food.

You can order without leaving the room at all. So convenient, right? There's a tablet inside the room. You choose your food from that tablet. The menu has so many options. Pizza, fries, yakitori, onigiri -- all sorts of things. There's so much delicious food!

I always order yakitori -- every single time. You can order drinks too. Beer, cola, juice -- whatever you want! You can eat while you're singing. That's what makes Japanese karaoke so great. Isn't that amazing!

Next -- let's talk about all-you-can-drink plans. All-you-can-drink is a special plan. For example, you can drink anything you like for 2 hours. Beer, cola, green tea -- anything goes! The price is really reasonable. Usually around 1,000 to 2,000 yen.

Because of the plan, it's really great value. Lots of people go for the all-you-can-drink option. I often choose it myself. But please -- don't drink too much! All-you-can-drink plans are really popular at karaoke. You should definitely try it when you go! So what do people actually do at karaoke?

Singing, of course! But it's not just about the singing. You eat while you sing. You drink while you chat with your friends. Singing, talking, laughing -- you do it all. It's such a great time. Sessions usually last 2 to 3 hours. Because the time is long, you can sing loads.

I often stay at karaoke for over 3 hours -- I lose track of time! I sing my favourite songs. It feels absolutely amazing! Watching your friends sing is just as fun. Everyone spends such a good time together. Karaoke really creates the best memories. Now, let me teach you some useful words for karaoke. First -- a phrase for inviting a friend.

'Let's go to karaoke!' Try using this phrase. Next, when you're in the room and ordering food: Choose it on the tablet and press the button. Simple, right? You look for the song you want to sing. 'I want to sing this song.' Then you use the mic and sing.

After you sing, your friends will cheer you on! 'You're so good!' Please remember these phrases too! And finally -- a quick word on karaoke manners. When your friend is singing, listen and cheer them on. After they finish, tell them: 'That was great!'

Karaoke is time to enjoy together. Share the mic with everyone. That way, everyone has a wonderful time. Right -- practice time! Listen to my questions. I have two questions for you. Here's the first question. Have you ever been to karaoke?

Try saying 'Yes, I have' or 'No, I haven't.' Here's the second question. What song would you like to sing at karaoke? Try answering in Japanese! For example: 'I want to sing ___.'

Write your answer in the comments! I'm really looking forward to reading them! Today we talked about Japanese karaoke -- how much did you follow? Listening practice matters so much. But speaking practice is just as important. I teach Japanese at Japademy. We have JLPT courses there.

Classes are small -- up to 8 people. Your teacher corrects your Japanese in real time. Check the link below. You can also take a free trial lesson -- I'd love to meet you there. See you in the next video. Thank you so much for watching!
