Hi everyone! Today I want to talk about the most popular anime in Japan in 2026. This is a Japanese listening practice podcast at N4 level. English subtitles are included throughout, so don't worry if you miss something.
Do you watch anime? I'll be sharing my personal opinions throughout -- so I hope you enjoy it! Let me start by telling you a little about my relationship with anime. I usually watch anime during lunch, or just before bed at night. I don't watch every day, but once I find a good one, I end up watching way more than I planned! Anime is incredibly popular in Japan. On the train, in cafes -- you'll often spot people watching anime on their phones. And among friends, anime is a really important conversation topic. When a new season starts, you hear 'Have you seen it yet? What did you think?' everywhere. There was a time when anime was thought of as just for kids -- but these days, adults love it too. Action, fantasy, sports, romance -- there are so many genres, you can always find something that suits you.
Personally, I love anime where the characters grow and the story keeps moving forward. That's why I struggle a little with slow-paced anime. I'll come back to that later! By the way, I think a lot of you probably started learning Japanese because of anime, right?
As a Japanese teacher, that makes me really happy. So, let me introduce some of the most popular anime in Japan in 2026. In the winter season, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 was the most popular. It was the most-watched anime across streaming platforms in Japan. On Netflix too, it was apparently the most-watched Japanese anime of the first half of the year. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 was also popular in winter -- it aired from January to March. And in spring, Dorohedoro Season 2 also became a big topic. 2026 has really been a fantastic year for anime fans -- so many great shows. Now let me tell you about the anime I actually watched myself this year. First up -- Jujutsu Kaisen. I actually tried watching this one before. But when it moved from Season 1 to Season 2, the story got really complicated -- and I just couldn't keep up. So I stopped watching.
But this year, I decided to give it another chance and watched everything from Season 1. This time, the story finally clicked -- and I genuinely enjoyed it. Jujutsu Kaisen is about people called sorcerers who fight against curses. In Season 3, a massive battle called the Culling Game begins -- sorcerers fight inside barriers spread across Japan. The action scenes are so cool -- so satisfying to watch. The manga has also been a massive commercial success -- reportedly over 150 million copies sold. My favourite character is Sukuna. He's the villain of the story -- incredibly strong, and the way he talks is just intimidating. A character who shows their power purely through the way they speak -- that's really rare. Whenever Sukuna appears, I find myself whispering, 'He's terrifying...' If you haven't seen it yet, I'd definitely recommend starting from Season 1!
Next -- Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Season 2. This anime is incredibly popular among my Japanese language students. They often ask me, 'Kanami Sensei, have you seen Frieren?' My husband loves it too -- he keeps asking me to watch it with him. Honestly -- every single time I try to watch Frieren, I fall asleep. Slow-paced anime is just not really my thing. Even sitting right next to my husband while he watches -- I fall asleep every time. He always says, 'Just watch a little more -- it gets interesting!' But I can't do it! That said, Frieren herself is absolutely adorable -- I do love her design. And knowing my students are so passionate about anime -- as a teacher, that genuinely makes me happy.
And lastly, I want to tell you about the anime I personally enjoyed the most this year. It's called Dr. Stone. The storyline is really unique. Suddenly, every human being in the world turns to stone. Then, 3,700 years later, a scientist named Senku wakes up from inside the stone. Senku's goal is to rebuild human civilisation from scratch using science. The art style is really colourful and detailed -- it's such a joy to watch. Throughout the story, Senku travels the world -- using science in all kinds of places. You find yourself watching and thinking, 'Can science really do that?' -- and before you know it, another episode is over. The story is packed with real scientific facts -- you actually learn things while watching, which I love. My favourite character is Senku. He's so intelligent and confident -- a truly brilliant leader. But he also has a real kindness -- whenever someone needs help, he immediately tries to help them. That's what I love about him.
