Using ~が好きです to express likes

Attach が好きです (ga suki desu) after a noun to say you like or love something. It is one of the most essential beginner patterns.

Example: わたしはおちゃがすきです。

Using ~をします to describe actions

Combine a noun with をします (wo shimasu) to express doing or performing that activity. Works for chores, hobbies, and routines.

English Translation

Hey everyone! I'm Kanami. Today, let's talk about my morning routine. What time do you wake up every morning? I wake up at 7:30 every morning. I use an alarm. My smartphone alarm, to be exact. The alarm goes off -- and I get up. First, I check my phone.

I look through any important emails. And messages too. That's always how my mornings start. Next, I make something to drink. My throat is always dry in the morning. So I drink something right away. I love tea. I drink tea every single morning. Warm tea is just perfect -- especially first thing in the morning. Sometimes I have water too. Water is great for you as well.

That first drink of the morning -- it really matters. What do you like to drink in the morning? Coffee? Tea? Something else? After that, I start getting ready. I do my makeup. And I fix my hair. Every morning I look in the mirror. Once I'm ready, it's time for work.

My job is something I genuinely love. When I'm all ready -- it just feels good. At 9am, I have lessons. I teach Japanese. I talk with my students and teach them Japanese. At 11am, I check emails. I go through messages from students.

And messages from our teachers too. I write back to everyone. Being a Japanese teacher -- it keeps you busy! But I love every moment of it. Around noon, I start cooking lunch. I enjoy cooking. I make lunch and then eat it. That's my typical weekday morning.

Weekends are totally different. On weekends, I wake up at 8 or 9am. I sleep in a little -- and it feels wonderful. That's something I really look forward to! Then I go for a walk. A 45-minute walk. The fresh air outside feels so good. After the walk, I head back home.

I do the cleaning. And the laundry. Or sometimes -- I just watch YouTube! YouTube is pretty great, isn't it? Alright -- practice time! Try to answer in Japanese. Here's the question: What time do you wake up? And: What's the very first thing you do in the morning?

Let me know in the comments! For example: 'I wake up at 7. First, I have a coffee.' Any answer is wonderful. Do your best! Today we talked about my morning routine. How much did you understand? Do you want to speak more Japanese?

Listening practice matters so much -- but studying with a real teacher takes you to the next level. I teach Japanese at Japademy. Over 700 students have studied with us. Our classes are small -- max 8 students, so your teacher really knows you.
