There are lots of interesting things to know about Yumiko-san. She is arguably the funniest teacher at Japademy, and admitted the favorite thing about herself is that she is always laughing. Besides that, her childhood dream was to be an Olympic athlete and if she could have any job on the planet, she would choose to be a Brain Scientist. But what surprises us the most about her, is that she is the only Japanese person we have ever know about who dislikes nattoo!

Why did you choose to be a Japanese teacher?

I love to teach and share Japanese culture.

What do you like the most about being a teacher?

Seeing my students improve and being able to use Japanese in real life.

What is the most challenging thing about teaching Japanese?

To keep my students motivated when they struggle with new grammar.

What do you think is the most difficult thing for students about learning Japanese?

I think it is memorizing 3 different scripts, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Although learning Hiragana and Katakana is not that challenging, I know that students may get overwhelmed by how difficult Kanjis can be to remember as well as how many there are.

What do you think is the easiest thing for students about learning Japanese?

Learning about Japanese culture. The reason for that is that students enjoy discovering many of the unusual things that Japanese do, why they do it and the way they do it. I think in that sense Japan is quite unique and that is what makes it so attractive to foreigners.

How do you motivate your students to learn?

I constantly encourage and praise my students, even when they make a mistake. It is important to let students know that our lessons are the right place for them to make as many mistakes as needed to improve with the language.

What advice do you have for people who would like to learn Japanese?

Just start! I know it feels like a challenging thing to do but once you get started it gets easier and easier over time.

Have you tried learning other languages? Which ones?

German.

What is the Japanese food that you would recommend to students?

Agedashi Tofu. It is a hot dish made of soft or medium tofu cut into cubes served in a hot broth made of dashi, mirin, and shō-yu. I think everyone would love it!

What is the Japanese food that you would NOT recommend to students?

Nattoo and Rakkyo. It may come to a surprise that I do not recommend nattoo as a Japanese person. It is usually that kind of thing that you either love it or hate it, which is my case.

Why would you recommend people to learn Japanese at Japademy?

I would do it for several reasons. The good cost of learning when compared to other Japanese language schools. The teachers are native from Japan and very well trained. The learning materials we have prepared is so engaging and much better than what other schools offer. And finally, because you will really learn Japanese with us.
